What is the Proper Dosage of Fish Oil?

If you are looking into the proper dosage of fish oil, then you probably are already aware of the numerous health benefits swimming all around you. It is what you don’t know that can hurt your health and your bank account.

The reason people are looking for fish oil is that it is loaded with omega3 fatty acids and in particular two of them – DHA and EPA. Omega3 fatty acids are the building blocks of the cellular membranes that surround every cell in our body. They control the cells energy production and are also converted into messenger molecules that influence a host of body functions. These fatty acids are essential to our brains, hearts, blood vessels, bones, joints and eyes.

DHA and EPA are like vitamin C in that we have to get them from our diets. Our bodies cannot make  One shot keto complaints them, leaving us two choices – fish oil supplements or eat a lot of seafood.

You could have 1-2 servings a day of wild fish to get your omega3’s but that would be 2-3 times what the FDA recommends. They are concerned about the various toxins that are now part of most of the worlds oceans, seas and rivers. These include various heavy metals and PCBs that find their way into the fish fat which is also where the healthful oils come from. Farmed raised species have their own health issues and because of the way they are fed [pellets instead of natural wild algae], little nutrient content.

Fortunately, there are some good    review  pharmaceutical grade supplements available that are molecularly distilled to remove the contaminants. They can be, however, wildly different in price and even effectiveness.

The American Heart Association recommends around 200mg per day of omega3’s for optimal health. Many naturopath doctors and nutritionists think 10 times that dose is appropriate. This is what I suggest.

1] If you are pregnant or nursing consult with your OBYGN for the proper dosage amount. Numerous studies have shown that DHA is a very powerful addition for both mother and child. In most cases, 100-200mg should be well within safety limits.

2] If you are on aspirin or other blood thinners, check with your doctor. Any fish oil dosage can interfere with these. Also, make sure you are getting enough Vitamin C – even aspirin can cause a deficiency.

3] A normal reasonably healthy adult can take 1000mg per day dosage of Omega3’s. Some people take more but that is what I do
